William Kingston was sentenced about 1823 to "be hung by the neck until he was dead". for being a member of a group who stole several items of cloth and three dozen pairs of shoes from someone near where they lived, presumably in Gloucestershire.
Because Tasmania desperately needed people from a farming background this sentence was commuted to transportation for life to Tasmania. The Tasmanian governor, (then Van Diemen's Land) commuted the sentence in 1839, and granted William an unconditional pardon.

But the officials in Tasmania were a lot more generous than those in the old country, and in 1832, seven years before the pardon was granted, William married Ann Clutterbuck, in Hobart. She was from India, not the East Indies. My grandfather, Montvill Smith, and his brother more so, who were the grandsons of Ann and William had noticeably darker complexions than was common among Anglo-Saxons in Tasmania born nearly a hundred and fifty years ago. I can't find much about Ann Clutterbuck but am still searching. Regards, Alan Smith, Brisbane

I have found a note in my files, that says the Clutterbucks of Geelong are relatives of the Lockes. The note says that the old lady has photos of Edward and or Frederick Locke but won't let anyone have a look at them. This note was from 2003 and she may be dead now. The note was from a conversation with Ed Synott who is also a descendant of Edward Frederick Locke who was a convict and arrive in 1849 on the Eden. He married Fanny Davison and they had 12 children all over the Bellarine Peninsula around Geelong.
If anyone has a cost at or any details of these Clutterbucks. Sjkeys@ bigpond.com please. Or 0409028982

Hi there, I am researching my Clutterbuck ancestry here in Australia, My 4th Great Grandfather was John Clutterbuck Born Long Sutton Lincolnshire September 5th 1790 7 Died September 1849, He married Elizabeth Payne B 1792 - D 1854, They had 4 sons, Thomas b 1826, John 1827 (My 3rd GGF) Samuel 1829 & Jonathon 1836, Thomas was the first to come to Australia from this family line with Wife Mary Ann Eaton, as well as Mary's daughter also named Mary Ann Eaton, they arrived in Bowden South Australia abt.1848, Thomas died in 1850, His brother my GGf 3rd, arrived in Bowden South Australia around 1853 and at some point married Mary Ann Eaton the 2nd, Daughter of his brother Thomas' wife. Very confusing when first discovered but the info available brought clarity eventually, The family made its way across Victoria and into the North East of the state, with many settling there and in the Southern Riverina towns of NSW. I am looking for any info that will take me back from John Clutterbuck & Elizabeth payne, Recently I have discovered a few generation going back to nearly 1620, But I am not confident the info is a match to my tree. John & Elizabeth are both locked into my tree without question, but beyond that I am struggling, So if anyone has any clues for me they would be very much appreciated, Also happy to provide anything that I have if you are connected to this family.

Regards
David Dodd

Hi my Clutterbuck relatives came from County Cork Ireland married into the Crone family. Thomas Crone 1811-1871 married Honora Roache and came to Melbourne in 1862.

THomas' father was Richard Crone 1771-1856 m Eliz Browning of Bylox and Carass Court. Clutterbuck Crone born about same time was his brother. And in many family trees Richards children are wrongly attributed to Clutterbuck Crone.

Daniel Crone married Ann Clutterbuck and they were Richards and Clutterbuck Crones grandparents
